Kawerak, Inc. is a co-managing owner of Pilgrim Hot Springs. On behalf of Unaatuq,
LLC., Kawerak is working to assemble a Cultural Advisory Committee, comprised of people having a direct or indirect relationship with the Pilgrim Hot Springs mission. The committee meetings will allow Pilgrim Hot Springs staff the ability to gain input on culturally relevant topics relating to Pilgrim Hot Springs, including the cemetery monument, the mission and boarding school history, public outreach, and media opportunities. The committee will give guidance on how to best educate regional residents and visitors about the mission and orphanage as it relates to the people who lived there.
Cultural Advisory Committee Details:
Length of service: 1 year minimum
Total time commitment: A minimum of four meetings total over two-year period, including one full day meeting onsite at Pilgrim Hot Springs
Committee size: Maximum eight people
Compensation: Members will receive a stipend for their participation in each meeting
Public representation: Members will be representatives of the Pilgrim Hot Springs initiative and be expected to represent Pilgrim Hot Springs and its partner organizations in a positive way
Media Release: Committee members will be informed of all media activities (photography, recording, interviews) that will happen during meetings, and asked to sign media releases as appropriate
Committee Member Description and Duties:
The Pilgrim Hot Springs Cultural Advisory Committee (PHS CAC) will be comprised of people having a direct or indirect relationship with the Pilgrim Hot Springs mission, orphanage, boarding school, or catholic church activities. This also can include past caretakers of the property and their families. The PHS CAC will meet bi-annually over a two-year period (minimum four meetings total) to provide input and advice to Pilgrim Hot Springs staff. The meeting topics will focus on historic research, cemetery studies, the mission school, the orphanage, and other topics the committee deems important.
The committee members will share suggestions for public outreach and media opportunities to educate regional residents and visitors about the mission and orphanage as it relates to the children who lived there. This will also include suggestions for gathering oral histories and stories from people with ties to Pilgrim Hot Springs, i.e., guidance on how to focus on specific themes, historical events, etc. Another main activity of this group will be to assist with the planning and design of a monument to be erected at the Pilgrim Hot Springs cemetery in honor of the people and children buried on the property in unmarked graves. This will also include guidance on the creation of interpretive signage to be placed around the property.
Major Committee Goals:
• Provide input, information, and advice to Pilgrim Hot Springs staff regarding cultural efforts, historical preservation, and future development of the site
• Provide guidance for the planning and design of monument for Pilgrim Hot Springs cemetery, and interpretive signage around the property
• Provide guidance on the creation of educational outreach materials to share with the public
• Provide guidance with the creation of reports to share to the Unaatuq Board of Directors and their respective member owner organizations
