Geothermal power plant design reaches 95% milestone
As a co-managing owner of Unaatuq, and as part of the Unaatuq Tribal
Development Organization, Kawerak, Inc. has secured multiple sources
of funding to develop the low temperature geothermal resource of the
property. Funding has been secured through the Department of Energy,
Office of Indian Energy, the Denali Commission, and upcoming support
through the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Utility
Services, as well as pending support through the Bureau of Indian Affairs
Tribal Climate Resilience program.
Unaatuq is working with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, DeerStone Consulting, University of Alaska Fairbanks, Alaska Center for Energy and Power, CRW Engineering, and Sustainable Solutions on this project, which will utilize an existing geothermal well on the property to produce power and heat for onsite facilities. The power plant will be one of the smallest isolated geothermal microgrids in the world, and will utilize an ElectraTherm Organic Rankine Cycle rated at 75kW combined with a Battery Energy Storage System to stabilize and form the electric grid.
The project is currently at the 95% design milestone and is undergoing review for NEPA and Section 106 compliance before it moves to permitting and final design + procurement. The construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2026.
